In lockdown again?

Masked Girl in Rome, Italy

Last week was not a good week. It was the week that the world woke up to the threat of a new Covid variant that is closing borders again. We also see record numbers of infections in many countries, some of them seeing their highest numbers yet. It is an acute reminder that the pandemic is not over yet.

The image I am sharing today is from the Spanish Steps in Rome, Italy. This is an iconic site that is not missed by any tourist that visits the city. Typically crowded, it is hard to see it empty during any time of day or night. However, during the lockdown, the place used to be deserted. I used to watch the webcam at this location frequently, and one day this girl wearing a mask showed up and just started to stare into the fountain. She looked so forlorn and so alone that I could not help but take her picture.

I am now fearful that a day like this may yet come again; however, I really hope I'm wrong.
